A bio I want to use sometime

Daily Doodle: Me and the Squirrel

Working on an illustrator bio for the back jacket flap of I'M BORED (author: Michael Ian Black, coming out from Simon & Schuster in 2012). When I mentioned this on Facebook recently, my astrophysicist friend Bruce Macintosh (who knows about my longtime love-hate relationship with squirrels) helpfully suggested this text:

"Deborah Ohi was born in 1837 in an underground city founded by a tribe of lost Japanese-Welsh seafarers on the site that now holds Toronto. She was raised from birth to be the champion of her people in their struggle against the Great Squirrel Queen, but lost most of her memories in 1972 in a mysterious asparagus accident and hence has no idea why squirrels continue to infiltrate her walls, or why nuts glow in her presence. She is a talented illustrator, and can metabolize several kinds of bark. She lives in Toronto with her husband Jeff. "

Which inspired today's Daily Doodle. :-)

Happy Valentine's to my sweetie

jeffdeb-honeymoonbw.jpg

Above: photo of Jeff and me years ago (check out my glasses, whoa!), taken by Gord Gibson.

Oh my, I am still sooooooooooooooo in love with my sweetie. To other couples out there: do whatever you can to get through the rough spots because the payoff in the end is well worth it. Or at least it was for us.

I think back to the heart-fluttering flowers-and-butterflies angst of early love in our relationship and can't help but smile. There was a time when I missed it.

But now? Now I know it was just the appetizer.

Happy Valentine's Day, my love.

Slow Cooker Experiment

Slow cooker leftovers

Decided to try an experiment today -- I took all the leftover veggies plus some ribs (that wouldn't fit in the pot) from recent party we had, and I'm throwing EVERYTHING into the slow cooker. Added some chicken broth, some spices.
We'll see what happens.

The book peeking out from beside the cooker: Vol. 5 of the FLIGHT series, edited by Kazu Kibuishi. I love this series. Anyway, one of the graphic stories in this particular volume was by Toronto illustrators John Martz and Ryan North.
