Urban Tapestry's Aurora Award, my new MacBook

Above: Photo by Allison. See Allison's LJ post on the topic here. Allison's husband John was at Toronto Trek this year, and called yesterday to let her know that Urban Tapestry received an Aurora Award for "Fan Achievement (Other)" at the annual 2006 Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Awards ceremony (!).

Aurora Award

According to the official site, the Prix Aurora Awards were created to highlight "the best in Canadian SF and fantasy." There are six professional awards (three English and three French), three fan awards, and one artistic achievement award (open to both pros & fans). "The Aurora awards are closest to the style of the Hugo awards (which are presented by the SF Worldcon) in the method by which they are selected. First there is a nomination phase to select a short list. Then a voting phase to pick the winner from the short list using the Australian voting method (this method has the voter rank their choices in each category). Each year a different convention or group has hosted the awards. The awards are financed by voting fees, by donations and by the host convention. There is no permanent funding." The Fan Achievement award we won is one of three Fan Achievement awards; the others are the Organizational and Publication categories.

Allison, Jodi and I were honoured to be nominated in the same category as Martin Springett, Don Bassie, Judith Hayman, and Larry Stewart this year. Thanks so much to those who nominated and voted for us.

You can find out more about the Prix Aurora Awards here.

My new MacBook!

Woohoo, my new MacBook arrived on Friday! Jeff's going to help me move my stuff from the old PowerBook G4 this week. My new laptop is smaller, faster, and I've named her Eliza (after my main character in Will Write For Chocolate.) Look out, world!

Eva and Rafael

Rafael and Eva

Had a wonderful evening with Eva (pronounced "AY-fah") Wiest (soon to change to Van Daele-Hunt) and Rafael Van Daele-Hunt. Jodi, Allison, John and I met with them only a few hours after Eva arrived in Toronto from Germany. Eva and Rafael are to be married in less than a week!

Rafael, as I've mentioned before, is originally from Toronto. He met Eva during a visit to Germany and, well, he didn't want to go back home. How romantic is that? I loved seeing them together. Eva was remarkably cheerful and energetic after her long flight; having her beloved Rafael waiting at the other end helped, I'm sure. ;-)

And once again, I find myself incredibly grateful to Filkcontinental; I'm still floored by all the wonderful people we met at that convention, the friends we've made as a result. And the musical collaborations! Allison, Jodi and I have already starting talking with Eva and Crystal about ideas for GAfilk, how our two groups could collaborate on some songs for the fun of it. I'm already getting excited about scoring interesting harmony and counterpoint parts for five voices. Or SIX! Linda Melnick is the Toastmistress; does anyone out there know her e-mail address?

Lordy, I do love the filk community.

But I digress. :-)

Anyway, we passed on the various greetings from friends, and gave them our wedding gift. But Eva and Rafael had brought their own gifts! Including a large variety (and quantity) of chocolate for Jodi, Allison and me. I especially can't wait to try my Hot Masala Dolfin Milk Chocolate and Pink Peppercorn Dolfin Dark Chocolate bars, as well intriguing Lindt flavours like "Citron Intense". They also brought us each a Niederegger Nougat-Ei, which is an actual egg shell filled with nougat.

(pause while I wipe the drool off my keyboard)

Before heading off to dinner

Thanks also to Allison and John for the gifts of Easter chocolate! Allison said she felt silly bringing out Canadian Easter chocolate animals after being presented with gourmet chocolate from overseas but y'know, there's something to be said about biting off the heads of cute little woodland animals at Easter.

Allison, Jodi and I were also thrilled to receive pre-release copies of the new Summer and Fall CD ("Last Sunny Day"), which is nearly ready for official release, as well as Eva's and Rafael's wedding CD. I listened to the Summer and Fall CD as soon as I came home, of course, and love it. The album has songs in both German and English, and makes me look forward to GAfilk even more...I can't wait to hear Eva and Crystal perform again.

Rafael and Eva

I've posted my photos from our visit with Eva and Rafael in my Flickr account, but you should also check out Allison's photos and LJ report.

For those of you who don't already know, Eva Wiest is one half of Summer and Fall, a fantastic German duo whom we were delighted to discover are going to be Interfilk guests at GAfilk in Atlanta next year (when we're Guests of Honor and Linda Melnick is Toastmistress). Yay for Interfilk! And don't forget to register soon for GAfilk; registration is only US$30 until November 30th, after which the fee goes up to $50. Don't miss it -- it's going to be SO much fun. :-)

And congrats again, Eva and Rafael!

FKO highlights (part 4)

Melissa and baby

Dave's gone on to Port Dover but he's left behind chocolate, chili and some wonderful memories. Allison and John came over on Wednesday night to join Dave and me for dinner; we had chili and Dave's garlic-cheese bread. Allison brought dessert: a key lime pie and melt-in-your-mouth shortbread cookies. Yum! Walter and Jeff showed up later in the evening, and there was much music. I love this photo that John took of me, Allison and Dave and also this photo of Walter and me in front of the fireplace.

My friend Walter has some new pics up with selected stills of the video footage he took of our concert with Franklin, including the moment when I realized that Jeff was in the audience (sitting beside Walter). Here are Walter's other FKO photos.

I forgot to mention that I discovered on the weekend that my Lord of the Rings Musical review was mentioned in the Toronto Sun as well as an Ottawa paper recently. If anyone still has the clippings, I'd very much appreciate a copy, thanks.

Jodi and Sibylle (part 2)

FKO highlights continued from Parts 1, 2, 3, and 2b (Davevisit)...

(Warning: way too many exclamation marks in the text below)

Eloise has a great list of other FilKONtario reports and photos online, for those interested (check bottom of that linked page). Hey, and I just found out that Sibylle has her photos online, a collection which includes some of the silliest moments from our concert with Franklin and an even sillier photo of Sibylle with Urban Tapestry. :-)

John Hall has also posted his photos from FKO in his gallery, including a photo of our concert with Franklin and the last song in our concert where Wolfram, Walter and Sibylle helped out with props.

And here are my photos from the weekend.

Meanwhile, here are a few more of my personal highlights from FKO, in no particular order:

Starsoul

Above: Performing "Starsoul" (Photo by Walter). Note that I'm wearing my Chris Conway fangirl t-shirt! Allison took a great photo of Chris and me, if you want to see the t-shirt design more clearly.

- Commiserating with Judith on Sunday afternoon about some recent frustrations. It was funny...neither of us had to say anything, we just grabbed hands and yelled together. Highly satisfying and also fun.

- The cover that Daniel Glasser made for the DVD/CD recording of the Stan Rogers Tribute concert that Dandelion Wine (I was one of their special guests) did for Sue Posteraro at GAfilk. Sue won the package at an Interfilk auction, and Daniel donated the recordings to this year's FKO Interfilk auction.

- Thanks to Walter for buying the Urban Tapestry Songbook (now out of print) that we donated to the auction.

- Coming back from open filk at around 4 a.m. early Sunday morning to find the entrance to our hotel room blocked with strips of masking tape (!). :-D :-D We have yet to find the culprit!!!

Franklin with the sports section

- Seeing Franklin again. Many thanks to Sue Posteraro and the rest of the FKO concom for inviting us to do a concert with him...we had SO MUCH FUN. Our concert playlist, for those interested: Another Round (by Juliane Honisch), Three Ravens (by Franklin), Wo Ist Der Bahnhof (by me), New Horizons (by Franklin, I believe), Save Ginny Weasley (by Harry and the Potters), I'm Going To Make A Rocketship (by me), Dwarves (lyrics by Franklin), The Question (by me), King's Yodel (by Franklin, I think), Still Beautiful (by Aryana), Maiden and the Knight (by Franklin, I believe), 'Cuz He's A Guy (by me), Unforgotten (by Laurence Dean), Hockey Monkey Song (by James Kochalka). Both Urban Tapestry and Franklin used a ton of silly props for several of the songs. Thanks to Amy McNally for adding violin to "Still Beautiful" and thanks to Walter, Wolfram and Sibylle for helping us out with props in the German version of the "Hockey Monkey Song".

- Hot tubbing with Franklin, Katy and Sibylle on Friday morning at the hotel.

Maya and Allison

- Seeing how the n'MC t-shirt turned out. Many thanks to Judith for doing such a great design with my drawings.

- The fabulous con suite, courtesy Elizabeth Wrigley.

- Joey Shoji's reaction to my friend Walter. :-D

- Thanks to Maya for these gorgeous handmade bookmarks for my collection:

Bookmarks from Maya

- Chocolate from Joey! I'll be writing a more detailed Blathering about some of the gourmet chocolate bars he gave me for my birthday. I felt incredibly spoiled.

- The giant Hershey bar that Walter donated to the Interfilk auction.

Gary and Sheryl

- Hearing Cat Faber sing They Spoke With Their Hands while Judi signed it.

- Seeing Chris Conway again. Not only is this guy an incredibly professional musician, but he's darned nice and fun to hang out with. I love this picture of Chris and Allison joking around during a pre-concert practice:

Chris and Allison

Allison also took a fun photo of Walter and me with Chris peering out between us.

- Tom Jeffers surprising everyone (or nearly everyone ;-) by attending FilKONtario when he said he wasn't going to be able to attend:

TomTom and Sue (part 1)

- My friend Walter's reaction when he heard Daniel Glasser doing "Close Your Eyes" for the first time. :-D

- Playing my new tin whistle with Urban Tapestry for the first time!

- Seeing Katy and Steve together. I never get tired of this. :-) I was surprised and happy when I found out they were both coming to FKO!

Jim and Chris

Above: Jim Hanks (brother of Tom Hanks!) and Chris Conway chat in the hallway. Jim was a film crew member of an independent movie company filming a documentary at FKO this year. Here is some info about The Filk Film Project (working title).

- Getting Honourable Mention in this year's FKO Hugging Contest; other HMs were Dave Weingart and Greg McMullan, with Ingrid de Buda winning top prize. I didn't even realize there was a hugging contest with actual anonymous judges. :-) When people registered, they were asked to wear a green sticker (hugs are ok), red sticker (hugs not ok) or yellow sticker (hugs ok with permission). I wore green.

- Carolyn Brown's Canadian song, eh?

- Seeing Sibylle get such a great audience response to her Evil Eyeball Song:

Sibylle doing her one-shot concert

- Singing Home To FilKONtario at the end of the convention and seeing most of the people sing along.

- Chris Conway's "Circle of One" song, which made me all teary-eyed. Chris has certainly done a great job at capturing the bittersweet experience of being left behind while everyone else seems to be having fun at a convention.

- Late night ice cream break with Sibylle, Katy, Allison, Walter, Jodi, Rand and Erin. Here's a photo that Allison took.

- Robert Cook's song about how he wants to be immortalized. One of the verses mentioned my comic strips. :-)

Ookla the Mok concert

Above: Rand during the Ookla the Mok concert; I like the look that Joe and Wolfram are exchanging here.

- Getting my Lord Landless CD! As I mentioned in a previous Blatherings, I had ordered it at Filkcontinental and had been kindly given a promo copy to keep me happy until the CD was officially released.

- Finding out what a nice voice Greg McMullan has.

- Seeing Judi Miller sign during Judith's "Yuck" song. Also during Ookla's "Number One" song. Aw heck, I just loved seeing her sign in general. :-)

- Seeing Rand and Erin again:

Rand and Erin (part 1)Rand and Erin (part 2)

Everyone knew Erin as "Rand's girlfriend" in the beginning, but now it's wonderful to see how she's become a part of the filk community on her own, whether or not Rand is around. :-)

- The wonderful sound crew at FKO! Ken Lalonde, Chris Croughton and Dave Weingart!! (if I'm missing anyone, please do let me know)

- Congrats to the new Hall of Fame inductees: Lois Mangan, Gretchen Roper, Steve Macdonald, and Franklin Gunkelmann.

- Phil Mills doing his "Universal Follower" in front of an audience and getting a great response. What a wonderful song. :-D

- Getting my copy of Mich Sampson's new CD:

Mich Sampson CD

Dear lord, I've been listening to this a TON since I came home, at least 2-3 times a day. Dave, Allison, John and I listened the CD during dinner the other night. The songs are gorgeous, the harmonies amazing. My favourite on the CD: Sholem. I really, really want to hear Divine Strumpet live someday. I've heard rumours that at least three of the four members of the group will be attending FilKONtario next year, which makes me very happy.

- Thanks to Tony Fabris for the introduction to home recording conversation during dinner on Sunday night with Michelle, Walter, Jodi, John and Allison. Here's a great photo that Allison took of Tony explaining "clipping" to me.

- Thanks to Bill Roper for the microphone advice!

- I'm a sucker for guys in tuxes:

Interfilk auction

Above: John Hall during the Interfilk auction. Thanks very much to John, by the way, for the Woodchuck Cider, which I love.

- Chocolates from Franklin. He gave me a box of Feodora chocolates for my birthday as well as presenting all of us with a giant Toblerone bar which we devoured on the weekend, and mini Ritter sport bars each morning. He also gave me a wonderfully obnoxious furry flower that played "Happy Birthday" twice if you pressed the leaf. I pressed the leaf a lot. Allison eventually tried hiding the flower but failed HAHA.

- Peggi and Ken performing "Kiss at the end of the rainbow" during Peggi's concert. SO sweet. :-)

- Seeing my drawings for the n'MC fundraising t-shirt turned into buttons, and being kindly given the whole set, yay! I'll be posting pics of some of these buttons in the months leading up to next year's FKO.

- Allison's reaction during our interview with the documentary film crew when Jodi and I both said "what she said!" after she gave her thoughtful and well-considered answer to their question "So how would YOU define filk?" My defence: she gave SUCH a great answer that I couldn't POSSIBLY hope to add anything to it. Plus cameras make me way nervous. :-)

Baby smiles

- Sibylle's entry in the Tie and Tails contest.

- Eavesdropping on tuning tips between Bill Roper and Dave Clement. I have SO much to learn as a guitarist.

- Thanks to Tom Jeffers for the birthday gift: a classy giraffe purse filled with candy! What more does a girl need, really?

- Getting a chance to spend a bit of time with Erica at the end of the convention, and to sing her the song that Dave and I co-wrote....

DR. ERICA
By Debbie Ridpath Ohi & Dave Clement

(Dave's notes: Overall in Key of C, Capo 3 in A chord shapes)

A D C
We see her standing in the line,
E
dressed all in blue
A D
The Interfilk auction's slowing down
E
and we don't know what to do!

D E
Then Dr. Erica, she steps forward,
A D
the lights are shining in her hair
D E
Suddenly cash and credit cards are
D E
flying through the air!

CHORUS:
A E
Dr. Erica
C D
You have a way about you
A E
Dr. Erica
C D E
And are those rumours true?

Like the rumour about the way she
can control a room
with a voice so pure and sweet as she
sings of death and doom.

When she sings a song for you
don't look in her eyes
Don't be sucked in when she says
Not Everybody Dies!

CHORUS

Like the one that says she's
moving to Toronto
Or maybe Winnipeg, come on,
you know you really want to!

Or the rumour that she censored
this line of the song
You know, I think that one is true...
...but hey, just sing along...

CHORUS:
A E
Dr. Erica
C D
You have a way about you
A E
Dr. Erica
C D
And are those rumours
A E
Dr. Erica
C D
You have a way about you
A E
Dr. Erica
C D E
And are those rumours true?

Again...many, many thanks to the FKO concom for doing such a wonderful job at making FilKONtario such a wonderful event this year!

FKO highlights (part 3)

Dave and Tony

Having a great time with Dave Clement. Allison and John are coming over tonight! Dave's made his famous chili, yum.

Above photo: Dave Weingart and Tony Fabris rehearsing in the hallway at FilKONtario. One of the things I like about filk conventions is exactly this sort of thing: the collaboration and mutual inspiration. I love wandering around the convention and finding people huddled together playing or working on music, brainstorming lyrics, etc.

Just found out that Allison's been posting some great FKO highlights in her Livejournal which are much more well-organized than I could possibly manage, so please do go check out her reports. Rather than try to recreate my own, I'll just add some comments and other personal convention highlights...

- As Allison pointed out, this was the first convention where all three of our husbands made an appearance!

Urban Tapestry husband sighting
Sibylle, James (Jodi's husband), and Jodi.

- Fun to meet the new Ookla the Mok members: Joe and Wolfram. Loved their concert on Friday night!

- I always bawl when Joey Shoji sings "Cranes Over Hiroshima"...it's such a gorgeous song, and Joey does it so well.

- Rogers Chocolates Victoria Creams Miniatures and bookmarks from Lyanne for my birthday.

- Very much enjoyed instrumental noodling with Peter Alway (dulcimer) and Amy McNally (fiddle) on the Friday night. Amy was kind enough to agree (on VERY SHORT NOTICE!) to play with us in our concert, when we performed Aryana's "Still Beautiful."

- Finding out that Tony Fabris and Michelle Dockrey are Guests of Honour at FilKONtario in 2008! Their 15 minute concert on Saturday afternoon blew everyone away, and I love their new song, "Thirteen."

Tony and Michelle
Tony and Michelle.

- The fabulous guests. Chris Conway, despite not feeling 100%, gave an amazing concert. I also enjoyed meeting Georgina, and hearing her sing in Chris's concert; she has a lovely voice.

- The tribute to Jodi that Chris gave with Allison in his concert, with an instrumental rendition of "The Lady"; Allison played guitar while Chris did a solo on his theramin. Jodi was the one who brought Chris into the filk community.

- Tanya Huff as Toastmaster! Not only was she entertaining, but she dressed with class (I especially loved the blue boa headdress). Here's a photo of some of the audience during her concert:

During Tanya's concert

- Judi Miller was a fantastic Interfilk guest, and her signing evoked both laughter and tears from the audience...she turned signing into an artform:

Chris Conway concert

- Judi was also friendly and easy to talk to. See Allison's LJ post about Judi here. Allison, Jodi and I learned a ton of useful signing phrases, like "need chocolate" and "Search For Spock". :-D Thanks so much to Interfilk for bringing this woman to FKO as a guest!
