20 Things I Love About My Sister

It's my sister's birthday today! We're having a small family gathering this evening to celebrate it.

Here are...

20 Things I Love About Ruth

She's an amazing artist. Ruth has always been good at drawing. Way back when we were really little, she used to prove this by drawing in a lot of our kid books (ok, so did I, but her doodles were better!).

Ruth's illustrated about 40 books now (several new titles soon to be released). And she's starting to write her own books as well!

She never takes life for granted.

She sketches all the time, most of it not related to work. She just LOVES DRAWING. At the cottage last week, she sat on the new tent platform, surrounded by trees and water, and sketched in watercolour. Even when it got so cold that despite layers of sweaters, her fingers were growing numb!

She gets such a joy out of her family's joy.

Her organizational skills. Especially in planning family trips! When Ruth gets in organization/planning mode, a whirlwind of activity ensues, with phonecalls, e-mails, intensive research.

Her love of dancing. By great, I don't mean a nightclub dance floor ... I mean in the living room, when she's grooving to favourite tunes with Sara and Annie, giving herself totally into the music.

She looks comfortable and classy in anything, from a slinky formal dress to baggy sweatpants and a t-shirt.

Ruth's one of the most creative people I know.

She's also one of the most positive people I know. She'll find silver linings where most people would just gripe.

She's not afraid of challenges. In fact, she goes out and looks for them.

She's way fun to hang out with.

Her presentations for students at schools and conferences about being a children's illustrator are extremely popular, and she is constantly having to turn down invites because her schedule is too full. A speaker at a writers' conference once said that one of the worst things that can happen to an author is to have to speak at a school after Ruth was there. :-)

She's not afraid of saying no.

Her time management skills. I have no idea how she manages to do all the things she does. Check out this sample page from her family calendar to the right:

The fact that despite her crazy schedule, she still makes it a priority to find time for herself.

Related to management of time, Ruth has also (out of necessity, I imagine) mastered the art of getting IMMEDIATELY into productive workmode. So many people (including me) need at least a bit of time to "warm up" and gradually ease into productivity.

Her sense of humour.

Ruth is constantly pushing the envelope, learning new things, striving for improvement. She never coasts through life; she grabs life with everything she has and doesn't let go.

How well she connects with kids, not just her own.

She's a dreamer.

How she can carve out her own space even when she's surrounded by chaos.

The way she values her solitude.

Ruth on a solo paddle at the cottage last weekend.

Her devotion to her craft. She puts an incredible amount of effort into each project, sometimes re-doing a painting dozens of times until she's happy with it.

She doesn't procrastinate.

Her enthusiasm for the Lord of the Rings movies, and the fact that she can recite Theodon's pre-battle speech from memory.

Her hugs.

She's incredibly fit! Not only does she regularly walk distances that most people would drive, but she works out at her local gym, cooks and eats healthy food.

The fact that she cries as much as I do when watching certain sappy movies and tv shows. I still remember how we used to watch episodes of Little House of the Prairie together (stop gagging, Andy!) with a box of Kleenex between us, bawling our eyes out.

The respect and love between her and her daughters. She never talks down to them.

The fact that no matter how busy she is, she always has time for those she loves.

She feels things deeply.

Ruth isn't just energetic, she bubbles over it, a lightning bolt of enthusiasm and laughter...it's infectious. I'll never forget my friend Dave Clement's reaction when he first met her, for example. Not being able to see her, his impression was completely from her voice and the way she talked (which was VERY energetic and fast, especially when she and I are talking together). First Dave smiled. The smile turned into a grin. Then a bigger grin that turned into a laugh of pure delight.

The relationship between her and Kaarel.

She's willing to subject herself to my cooking experiments.

She could spend hours browsing the children's section of a bookstore.

She's always there for me when I need her: a shoulder to cry on, a sounding board, a friend.

She can be tactful yet firm.

Her playfulness.

The fact that she and Jeff are such good friends.

And that she married a cool guy like Kaarel. :-)

She loves reading kids' books. Ruth and I are always exchanging books and book ideas; we have similar tastes in YA novels.

The depth of caring she shows her friends and family.

Once she's make up her mind to take on a project (personal or business), she doesn't stick a cautious toe in the water first...she leaps in right away and with enthusiasm.

She forgives me for putting her through mental torture when we were kids.

Her ability to know when to relax, and then to actually DO it.

Ruth, I admire you in so many different ways that I can't possibly even begin to describe here.

Happy birthday, sis. I love you like crazy.

Craigfame, filmfest, househunting

My friend Craig was in a Toronto Star cartoon yesterday!
Click on image for a close-up of the cartoon.

LOVED the cartoon of Craig in yesterday's paper, drawn by local artist and reporter Christopher Hutsul. If you're interested in what's going on at the Toronto FilmFest, do check out the official site or Craig's Toronto FilmFest News and Reviews.

I'm going to check out The Annual Taste of Toronto Entertainment District tonight, and may also check out the T.O. filmfest action across the street this evening. "I (heart) Huckabees" premieres tonight, and principal cast that may be attending include Dustin Hoffman, Isabelle Huppert, Jude Law, Jason Schwartzman, Lily Tomlin, Mark Wahlberg, and Naomi Watts. After that is "Clean", whose principal cast includes Maggie Cheung (from "Hero"!), Nick Nolte, Beatrice Dalle, Jeanne Balibar, Don McKellar, James Dennis, Martha Henry, James Johnston.

But to a completely different topic: looks like Jeff and I are going to start househunting again despite the recent Toronto housing boom. As much as we love our neighbourhood, we both agree that it's time for a change. We spread a map of Toronto out on our dining room table last night, marking off possible areas.

Chris Conway has suggested we move to Leicester instead. Of course I am checking out all prospects, but unfortunately I was unable to find a good Leicester restaurant directory online so I'm afraid Leicester has dropped in our list of potential move locations. ;-)

captions and Rand's new blog

Hey everyone, my friend Rand has a blog! If you're on LJ: JohnO's created an LJ feed already at rand_otm_feed. Holy toledo, John, that was fast!

Saw Hero again yesterday, this time with Parki. Liked it more the second time. I'm in love with Ziyi Zhang, though Daoming Chen is growing on me. I think I have to go see it for a third time to make sure.

Chris Conway and Jodi. Caption suggestions below!

Yesterday I asked people to suggest captions for the photo above. Here they are:

"God, she's gorgeous! Hope she doesn't ask about the jacket." (Tom Smith)

"Like I'm gonna let you kiss me....." (Amanda Snyder)

"This is what all the Cool British men are wearing now." (Tom Jeffers)

"Have you seen my trousers?" (Scott Snyder)

"Ok, what's funny? - have I got something on my face or something?" (Chris Conway)

"Yes Jodi, you have wonderful knees, now put your trousers back on and let's carry on with the journey..." (Chris Conway)

"Haha - fooled you with my cloak of invisibility!!" (Chris Conway)

randvisit

Rand and me. Photo by my 7-year-old niece Annie.

Enjoyed hanging out with Rand these past four days. We decided to spend part of the weekend in Buffalo, but most of the time in Toronto. Out of curiosity, I opted for a train to Buffalo instead of bus; though it's somewhat more expensive, I figured that it would be more comfortable, and would take less time.

I was right about the comfort, way wrong about the time...due to a two hour delay at the border because of customs problems with a couple of passengers. :-(

Buffalo taxis are somewhat more intimidating than
Toronto taxis.

I eventually did make it, however, and enjoyed checking out Rand's library again, eating at The Globe (seared tuna, crabcake, ginger and fennel salad, Thai rice salad), watching some old Ookla concert footage, feeding Chunky Rice, checking out Rand's NEW MAC, browsing Rust Belt Books, listening to music, catching up.

Rand's turtle, Chunky Rice.

Highlights of the Toronto part of Rand's visit in Toronto, for me, include:

- My dear friends Rand and Luisa meeting for the first time!

- Sunset walk with Luisa and Rand along the Scarborough bluffs. Hearing them compare Italian upbringing experiences. :-)

Annie, Sara, Ruth and Rand doing cartoons.

- Rand meeting Sara, Annie and Kaarel for the first time. Ok, Rand did meet Sara years ago, but she was too young to remember. Not surprisingly, Annie and Sara liked Rand quite a bit, and vice versa. :-) After Ruth and Rand got back from their coffee, we drew comic strips at the living room table while Rand sketched Annie.

- Oysters and Louisiana Tea (involves Grand Marnier, can't recall the other liqueurs, but it was very good) late one night. Yum.

Rand and Jodi at the Frog & Firkin.

- Dinner with Jodi and Rand on Sunday night at the Frog & Firkin at Yonge/Sheppard. Allison wasn't able to make it because she was out hiking with John. Good to catch up with Jodi; I haven't seen her in a few weeks. Lots of music and media talk which lingered long after our meals were finished, then we sat in Jodi's car to listen to one of her most recent recording projects.

- Going over old issues of The Electric Penguin, a newsletter I edited years ago (and yes, the inspiration for the name of our domain, electricpenguin.com).

- Many thanks to Rand for replacing a string that had broken on my harp. Turning the tuning key is still too tough because of my tendinitis, but he volunteered.

Rand, Jeff and Parki on the way to David Mason Books on Queen St.

- Watching Zoolander, which was far more amusing than I expected.

- Lunch at the Queen Mother Cafe with Jeff, Parki and Rand. We went to David Mason Books afterward, then I took Rand to Nicholas Hoare on Front Street, one of my favourite Toronto bookstores.

Rand at Masquerade in BCE Place.

A wonderful visit which seemed to go by way too quickly...but then again, that's usually the case with good friends. :-)

I have my laser eye surgery tomorrow; wish me luck.

wetstock

Luisa about to heave a water balloon through an
upstairs window.

Happy birthday, Mark Osier!

Had lots of fun at Reid's and Luisa's Wetstock 2004, their annual watergun party. I've upgraded my digital camera since the last party; sadly, this meant that I could no longer use my cool waterproof case, which in turn meant that I had to take photos from a relative distance.

The best prepared were Leslie Ambedian and Peter Kotanen, who arrived with a trunk full of water balloons in addition to their waterguns. In addition to participating in the water assaults, I chatted with the non-combatants on the "safe area" deck, swam in the pool, got a mini shiatsu massage from Justin (who recently completed a 9-month course!), pigged out on barbecued sausages and hamburgers and salads and fruit and homemade apple pie (from Laura & PeterC), played a board game, took a nap.

Many thanks to Reid and Luisa for hosting the event!

Here are a few photos from the party (you can see more in Reid's blog):

Jeff about to surprise-attack Luisa.

Leslie wielding a water balloon menacingly (if it's
possible to look menacing in a dress, that is).

Peter Cook.

Reid and Jeff.

I had to include a picture of Michelle, of course!

David Barker.

Jenny and Andrew.

ScottM and Karin.

Peter Kotanen.

Jamie's first watergun.

Jeff, trying to decide whether or not to shoot me.
