cincinnati

Yay, I'm in Cincinnati, OH! As you already know, my original flight was cancelled yesterday, but (on Andrea's suggestion) I rebooked for an earlier flight to Dayton on a baby plane (only 15 seats!). I did a rushed job of packing so I could catch a bus to the airport in time for my flight....as a result, I've forgotten to pack some basic items but way-overpacked on other items. Augh, ah well, at least I'm here. :-)

After picking me up, Andrea and I had dinner at Perkin's, where I discovered that I truly was in another country. Sample of conversation:

ME: "May I please have a serviette?"

WAITRESS: "A what?"

ME: "A serviette."

WAITRESS: "I'm sorry, um..."

ANDREA: "She means a 'napkin'."

WAITRESS: "AH! Ok, sure."

Visited the offices of F&W Publications, where I met with my editor, Jack Heffron (for The Writer's Online Marketplace) as well as others at F&W. Kinda cool to see the place; I've been reading Writer's Digest since I was a teenager, and have been a part of their Book Club.

9-month old Nicholas is adorable. He wasn't sure of me at first, spending most of his time staring at me as if I was an alien from another planet. Things warmed up, though, when I read him some picture books. I have a weakness for children who like books, for obvious reasons.

Here are some Guest Blatherings...

Guest Blathering From Andrea

Debbie arrived last night, laden with luggage and her guitar. As she mentioned I had to translate her Canadianize at Perkin's later that night ;_ )

Well . . . Debbie is in luuuuuve.

And Nick is enjoying every second of it. *g* I think she's taken over 50 pictures of Nick, until I kidnapped her camera.

Today after she visited F&W, we toured a small, decadent gourmet food shop in Hyde Park (Cincinnati, NOT London) and enjoyed a hot drink at Awakening's cafe. Nick enjoyed a few pieces of croissant as well. Then we sat in a small park between two busy streets with the wind blowing. Nick had a ball watching the cars, crawling in the grass and playing with Debbie and I.

It's great having Debbie visit! I haven't seen her since last June, and that seems like eons ago.

Tonight Tom is watching Nick, while Deb and I attend a theatre production of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. I hope she enjoys it.

Once again, Debbie is in great danger of being stolen away from Jeff and her UT buddies . . . We'll keep you updated on our plans . . .

Debbie again...

The play last night was great! Andrea took me out to dinner before the play. After we got back to her house, Nicholas was asleep and Tom was nearly-asleep. We spent a while drinking hot chocolate and lemon tea, and just chatting.

Going to OVFF tonight!

Update 11:58 am: Called to confirm my Air Canada flight, and it's been cancelled. :-( My return flight was also cancelled. Looks like I can't leave until tomorrow (I've been on hold for ages and am trying to re-book now)...

Update 12:17 pm: Called Andrea to tell her the news, and she suggested taking a flight to Dayton, OH instead. Yay, I'm still booked to fly to OH tonight! To those flying to OVFF from Toronto: I advise you to confirm your flights, just in case.

Leaving for Cincinnati this afternoon. I'm looking forward to visiting with Andrea and Tom, and meeting Nicholas for the first time. :-) I'll also be visiting the offices of Writer's Digest on Thursday, then going to OVFF on Friday.

Heard some unnerving news today: Jeff's parents are on their way home from Rome right now, and apparently a known terrorist got removed from the plane just before it took off. We're still waiting to hear details (Jeff's picking his dad up at the airport around the same time he's dropping me off for my flight).

Anyway, I'll try to Blather from Andrea's place and/or from OVFF. If I'm not able to, then I hope you all have a great weekend and I'll talk to you again early next week!

Blatherpic:

Yesterday afternoon, Jeff and I met Annie, Sara, and Ruth at Indigo bookstore. Annie and Sara are completely nuts for anything to do with the upcoming Lord of the Rings movie.

After we got back to their house, both Annie and Sara "performed" the trailer for us. Each knew all the words in the trailer. Annie's version (see photo at bottom) included a lot of sound effects and props, and she even had the "boom boom boom" bit when the Orcs start approaching (she emphasized each "boom" by jumping up and down very dramatically).

Ironically, neither Annie nor Sara will be seeing the movie in the theatre. They are both waiting for the video to come out so they can fast-forward over the scary bits. :-)

home for a day

Home! At least for a day; I'm leaving for Cincinnati, OH tomorrow for OVFF and to visit Andrea. Jeff picked me up at the airport late last night, the sweetie.

Short Blathering today since I've just spent a couple of hours updating my California trip report with photos I could -finally- download from my camera. To browse through the full report with photos, start here. Photos include a beardless Paul, Seanan playing guitar, photo of the elusive Sam Sheth, Jeff Bohnhoff's recording studio, the cuddly Kwinn twins.

And hey, thanks to Allison for letting me know that my Waiting For Frodo comic was mentioned in the Toronto Star on the weekend, in an article about how to pass time while waiting for the Lord of the Rings movie. :-)

Going to unpack from my California trip and re-pack for my Ohio trip now...

Grass Valley (Guest Blathering)

Guest Blatherer: Jeff Bohnhoff

The Perfect Guest

I went to Fremont on Friday afternoon to pick Debbie up at the Kwinn's. Maya and I have been looking forward to Debbie's visit since we first arranged for her to detour up to Grass Valley on her northern California tour. I have to admit though that I was a little nervous about the visit, because we had not had the opportunity to spend much time with Debbie, although Maya and I both felt an immediate affinity for her when we first met. I was a little afraid that after continuous exposure to us, that Debbie might regret spending time here that she could have spent with some of her older friends.

Anyway, I arrived at Paul and Beckett's a little after 6:30 on Friday. Beckett suggested that we go to one of her favorite Indian restaurants for dinner. I agreed a little reluctantly. Don't get me wrong, I *love* Indian food. My reluctance was based on the fact that Maya was not with us. She adores Indian food, and I dreaded the thought of going home and telling her that I had gotten an Indian meal without her. Grass Valley is a beautiful place to live, but it has no Indian food at all, so we jump at the chance to get it when we can. In fact, we often make it at home. Our planned menu for Saturday night included my Tandoori chicken and a wonderful Indian rice dish that Maya does. So, we all piled into Paul and Beckett's mini van and headed off to the restaurant.

The trip to the restaurant highlighted a couple of Debbie's most adorable qualities. One is that she is absolutely wonderful with kids. She and I were sitting in the very rear of the van, with the twins Riley and Casey strapped into the middle seats facing us. Riley decided that he was most definitley *not* amused, and let us know with all the subtlety an 8 month old can muster. Debbie began to desperately try to find a way to cheer him up. When funny faces and outright begging failed to work, she broke into the "Hockey Monkey Song". Now normally, this wouldn't be anything all that extrodinary, after all Debbie is a singer and all. However, Debbie happens to be recovering from a cold, and her singing voice at that moment owed more to Kermit the frog than Maria Callas, if you catch my drift. Singing to Riley was obviously causing her a lot of discomfort, but she kept doggedly on. Too bad Riley didn't appreciate her effort :-).

We soon arrived at the restaurant, and once released from the car seat, Riley cheered right up. The food was wonderful. I had a lamb curry with Nan, Dal, and a spicy spinach dish. Debbie had Tandoori Salmon. I'm not too sure how much she enjoyed hers, because she spent most of her time playing with the babies, who were in full-steam adorable mode. Paul and Beckett and I caught up a little bit. Most of the conversation centered around Beckett's desire to find a way to keep Debbie around permanently.

The ride home was pretty much like the ride to the restaurant, except this time Paul and I decided to help out. In all honesty, my singing voice is so bad, I probably frightened the poor little guy. Anyway, it didn't work, Riley was not impressed by our performance. When we got back to the Kwinn's, Paul played me a video tape of highlights from Puzzlebox's FilkContinental performance. His introduction in German was hilarious. The audience laughed in all the right places, and mercifully didn't laugh when he wasn't being intentionally funny. After that he skipped ahead to their performance of Persian Rose. It's kind of weird to hear someone else doing one of Maya and my songs. I usually think of our music as being something too quirky for anyone else to want to do. Paul and Taunya do a wonderful version, and I felt very honored that they decided to perform it. After seeing the con highlights, Debbie and I decided it was time to "hit the road". She warned me that she would probably fall asleep. I guess she's notorious for falling asleep on car trips.

I'm happy to report that Debbie stayed awake for the entire 3 hour drive to Grass Valley. We talked about all kinds of things, and the time flew by. My only complaint is that my right forearm was really sore by the time we got home. Everytime I would say anything nice or complimentary about her, Debbie would shout "Liar!" and sock me in the arm. Strange girl.....

The first thing Debbie wanted to see was my recording studio, so I took her out for the grand tour. She really liked the isolation booth. We listened to a couple of songs, and decided to turn in for the night. The next morning she met my 8 year old daughter Kristine. Kris and Debbie bonded pretty much instantly, and spent the morning happily chatting over tea and bagels. We went out to the studio, where Debbie demanded to hear everything we're working on. It's a real treat to share music with an appreciative audience.

Anyway, I could go on and on about everything we've done up to now (it's Sunday morning as I write this), but I can say that it has included magic tricks in the back seat of our car, impromptu art projects with my daughter, a small rebellion in which Maya and I were forcibly ejected from our kitchen after dinner last night, so that Debbie could clean up, and much much more. Debbie is a wonderful house guest. She's considerate, interesting, cheerful and just generally a pleasure to be around. I hope she has enjoyed her visit here at least half as much as we've enjoyed having her. Maya and I are currently plotting to find a way to get Debbie, Jeff, Allison and Jodi all to relocate to Grass Valley. Canada can consider itself formally warned.....

Monterey (updated)

I'd appreciate it if you'd all concentrate on sending good thought vibes (or maybe signing their guestbook) in the direction of Tim and Annie Walker right now. If you check her Witterings regularly, you'll know that they're going through a rough time right now.

And many sympathies go to the Hayman family, who recently lost their cat. :-( Non-pet people don't usually understand the feeling of loss that accompanies the loss of a close family pet, but I clearly remember how difficult it was for us to put our Australian terrier to sleep when she was at the end of her life.

Forgot to mention that while paying for my silly headband at the Hat Connection in San Francisco a couple days ago, the clerk behind the counter was talking to building security. Apparently some customer had seen some mysterious white powder on the steps in front of the Ghiradelli building, and the clerk wanted to make sure it was investigated. "I know it's probably nothing," I heard her saying, "But..."

Andrew and I were buying tickets at the Monterey Bay Aquarium yesterday when two fire engines pulled up to the building. As we were walking around the exhibits, Andrew overheard security guards talking about the possible need to keep people from leaving the Aquarium for a few hours. While we were watching the jellyfish exhibit, we also heard another security guard talking about a 'white powder'.

Fortunately, the scare seemed to clear up by the time we had to leave, but these incidents certainly do help emphasize the level of general paranoia around here right now.

In response to my anthrax paranoia comments, my friend Andy Beaton responded (via ICQ, just now): "Imagine life in California where people are afraid of white powder. How will movies get made?"

:-)

On a more positive note, the Monterey Bay Aquarium was as wonderful as I remembered; I highly recommend it for anyone visiting the area. Admission fee is somewhat pricey (about $17) but worth it. My fave exhibit is still the jellyfish room. We had lunch at The Fish Hopper, and browsed some shops along Cannery Row after the Aquarium. Lots of gorgeous oceanside scenery on the way home. Like the route to Monterey, however, there were intermittent patches of fog. Very weird to have clear blue skies one minute, heavy fog a few minute later, and then clear again.

Had dinner at Midori, a Japanese restaurant near Andrew's place. HEY, has anyone out there heard of Shonen Knife? Andrew played me some of their CDs today. Very fun Japanese girl trio who have songs about sushi and hot chocolate. Maybe Urban Tapestry should cover a song or two. :-)

I'm going to visit with Jeff and Maya Bohnhoff tonight!

Today's Blatherpics:

- Jellyfish at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

- Andrew, at a scenic stop we made on the way back to his place from Monterey.

- Seahorse. I don't remember seeing the seahorse exhibit last time I visited the Aquarium; either it's new, or I just missed it the first time. I love seahorses...they're such bizarre, otherworldly-looking creatures.
