Doodle: "In The Shadow Of A Rose"

Thanks to my friend Hazel Mitchell for the bouquet of flowers that helped create this found object (or should I say found shadow?) doodle.

How it happened: I wanted to do a found object doodle with one of the flowers, but didn't want to take a flower just after getting the bouquet. I spent a while thinking and then thought hey, maybe I can hold up a piece of paper against the bouquet and draw around the flowers that way.

But when I did, shadows got in the way. And then I thought HEY, that one shadow looks kind of like a woman's face. So I decided to work with it.

Here's a photo showing more of the setup:

More reasons why I have trouble throwing out old flowers

Nearly two weeks ago, I bought myself flowers to celebrate the official launch of the Judy Blume chapter books with my illustrations. This morning my husband walked into the kitchen to make coffee and found decaying vegetation spread out across the counter. Yes, it was my fault -- I find it hard to throw anything out before trying to doodle with it!

The most recent doodles were done with material from this fading bouquet. Here's another:
