My new cards, swoony technonerdboys, and dancing

Debbie's Blush card design: Love Birds

One of the new letterpress cards in my card line at Blush Publishing. I just got word that my cards are now being sold in Australia in addition to having distributors/vendors in Japan, U.K., Canada and the U.S.

We're still looking for more people to sell the cards in North America, so if anyone out there knows someone in the retail business (not just in North America, but ANYWHERE) who might be interested in carrying my cards, PLEASE do let the people at Blush Publishing know.

Speaking of lovebirds, Walter is continuing to upload photos from the wedding weekend. In addition to getting some great photos of Erin and Rand, he also has a ton of photos from others at the wedding. Here's one I love of John (Allison's husband) and me, doing our first and last karaoke stint:

I also like this photo Walter took of Allison and Jodi while they were all checking out some Buffalo area shops as well as doing a bit of sightseeing (I was in the bridal suite, taking pics of Erin getting ready for the wedding):

Jeff makes me swoon

One of the (many) things I love about Jeff is that not only is he a geeky technonerdboy, but he also loves doing handyman stuff and isn't afraid to get his hands dirty.

Jeff and finished fence

After our friends helped us take down our old fence, Walter and Jeff put in new posts, and then Jeff built the fence above. He did this on one of the hottest days this summer so far(!). Our neighbour's son did most of the painting.

Coolest news of the week:

Esquire uses e-paper for its anniversary issue: I am SO going to buy this issue, whether or not I'm interested in the magazine. I've lusted after e-paper ever since reading Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age.

My current favourite video

The best video I've seen in a long time. Made me a tad happy-weepy, it did. Thanks to Jeff for the pointer.

Dr. Horrible Sing-Along Blog plus a last wedding post

I'm falling behind in so many things right now, so I likely won't Blather again after today until I've had a chance to catch up.

Before I make my last wedding post, I have to thank Kim Phelan for pointing me to Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, which was written by Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy, Firefly and other great shows) and Maurissa Tancharoen. The three act series was produced on a shoestring budget (financed out of his own pocket) over six days during the writers' strike. Whedon says he wanted to show that there are other creative outlets apart from traditional television.

The first two acts are now online, and the third will be posted this weekend. Each act is about 18 minutes along. The site got so much traffic on its opening day that the servers crashed; the site was apparently getting 200,000 hits per hour.

Each act is available from iTunes for $2 and a "season pass" for all three episodes costs $4. After the download period, the videos will be taken offline and the series will be released as a DVD.

I -love- this series so far. A ton of entertainment and great songs packed into a very short time. I love the characters. The writing is brilliant. Jeff and I plan to buy the DVD, which is supposed to be packed with extras. We want to do whatever we can support this project; hopefully Joss Whedon will create more like it.

Anyway, do check out Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.

But back to my last wedding report post...

Erin and Rand in park

As I mentioned earlier on, my photo shoot with Erin and Rand just after the ceremony was cut short because of rain and a grumpy security guard. I managed to take quite a few photos in those 12 minutes, however. You can see some of these in my Flickr set, tagged with '12 min.'

As we hurried from one photo shoot location to another, I was tickled by the reaction of passersby. I do the same thing myself when I see a bride in her wedding finery on the street. Erin was especially radiant because she was beaming pretty much the whole time.

Smiling back, strangers called out their congratulations as we passed; it was truly a fairy tale moment.

Erin

Jeff and I left shortly before 10 (I was dead tired) and walked back to the hotel with Allison, John, Jodi and James. I didn't expect to see Rand and Erin again until the post-wedding breakfast but I was wrong.

At about 3 a.m., we were shocked out of sleep by a blaring alarm. A voice on the public loudspeaker announced that there was an emergency, and everyone needed to proceed to the nearest stairwell and...then the announcement was cut off. We waited, but there was no follow-up announcement.

Jeff called security, and we were told that we needed to come downstairs. We both figured it was a false alarm but decided to go down anyway to be safe.

Fire alarm

We ran into Erin and Rand plus some others from the wedding. Above: Dan, Jeff and Rand. The blurriness is because my camera lens from fogging up because of the humidity. We found out later from Walter (who had stayed in the hotel with Allison, John, Jodi and James, and watched the action from his hotel window) that Luis and Alisa had gone outside as well, but we never ran into them.

Despite the rude interruption to their wedding night, Erin and Rand took the unexpected event in stride. Rand was sleepily cracking jokes, and Erin went to get a parking pass from the front desk. Some wedding couples would have been throwing a fit, but Erin and Rand just hugged each other and were being...well...newlywedCUTE. :-)

It turns out one of the guests from another wedding was smoking in the elevator.

Cookies made by Rand's mom

The next morning, we dropped by the Bridal Suite for freshly baked bagels and other goodies, coffee and juice. The cookies in the above were baked by Rand's mom; they were amazing and she's promised to send me the recipe.

Rand, Erin and one of Rand's nephews

Above: One of Rand's nephews cuddles in his lap. During the weekend, I loved seeing Rand with his nephews, and how affectionate they are. In fact, I enjoyed seeing both Erin and Rand with their families, the affection and love a joy to witness.

Eden captures the feeling perfectly in her blog entry, "I thought the ceremony was very moving. What I noticed most was the feeling in the room. I have never been in a place so filled with love. Just pouring out from everyone toward Rand & Erin and filling the space with so much positive energy that it was nearly overwhelming."

Walter is continuing to upload wedding photos; he's up to the rehearsal dinner on Friday night.

Here's a photo of what I gave Erin and Rand for a wedding present:

My wedding present to Rand and Erin

I filled the book with photos, stories and poetry for the newlyweds, self-published as a hardcover book through Blurb.com. I was pretty happy with the quality, and will be using Blurb for other projects...possibly a Waiting For Frodo comic compilation, for instance. The service offers different sizes of book as well as paperback as well as hardcover.

You can find more of my wedding photos in my Flickr set, plus Walter, Allison, Jennifer, and Dave also have uploaded photos from the event.

To those who have encouraged me in my photography. I was especially touched by Vixy's comment:

Debbie Debbie DEBBIE. You are an AMAZING photographer!

I am absolutely serious when I say that the running-from-the-rain photo is the best wedding photo I've ever seen.

You have such an eye for Moments. Like the shot of Erin in the car, or of Erin's dad in the hallway... you have an eye for photos that clearly have a story embedded in them, and that tell that story at a glance. Or photos that make the viewer feel like we're looking in on a special scene, an intimate moment. Your photos make us feel close to the subject, like we're there, not just looking at posed models. That's what your photos have, really-- intimacy.

You also have an eye for *selecting* the photos; Jeff Bohnhoff recently said to me something to the effect that good photography usually involves taking 99 bad photos and one good one, and picking out the good one. :) However one says it, you have a gift for that too. You pick out the ones that show everyone to their best advantage.

...and I gush. But seriously. Don't ever say that your photos aren't good enough!

Many thanks to Vixy and others who have encouraged me in my photography. I still feel like a complete amateur, fumbling over settings and composition, but I'm gradually getting better.

I'll get more practice when I take my camera to photograph Allison's and John's new kitten tonight. :-)

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Erin and Rand

Wedding photography

Checking the train

[Unrelated update: Act I of Joss Whedon's direct-to-the-Web musical is now online! Check out Dr. Horrible's Singalong Blog. Thanks to Kim Phelan for the tip]

I'll start talking about the wedding itself in my next Blatherpost, but first I wanted to talk about wedding photography.

When Rand asked me to be the wedding photographer months ago, I said no. I said I wasn't good enough, that I'd be all weepy during the ceremony, that I hadn't had enough experience, that I'd be too stressed out and actually wanted to enjoy his wedding. With his gentle Rand powers of persuasion, however, he convinced me to at least do some casual photos right after the ceremony, just with him and Erin.

Erin and Rand

I agreed, of course. Erin and Rand are two of my favourite photo subjects, and I also couldn't pass up the chance to get some private time with both of them at their big event.

Erin and Rand

Rand asked our friend Walter to also take photos during the weekend. Walter took his responsibility very seriously, and even went out and bought some photographic equipment especially for the event. I mention this because some people at the wedding thought I was the Official Photographer, when Walter took FAR more photos and stayed on "photographer duty" much longer than I did.

Walter

Walter will eventually be posting some of his photos in his Flickr page.

Jeff and I went up to Buffalo with Walter on Friday afternoon; Erin had invited me to the rehearsal so I could take photos of the family, but I asked Walter if he could take some as well. I'm glad...the wedding/reception room was the most challenging photo spot that either of us had ever faced. Not only was the room itself generally dark, but it had windows that made backlighting a problem when taking any photos facing that direction, plus there were bright spotlights in the ceiling.

Quiet moment at the wedding rehearsal

The spotlights were more of a problem for me than for Walter because my style of photography relies heavily on natural light rather than flash. An aside: as much as I've developed any sort of "style" in my photos, I've found that I strongly prefer taking casual and candid rather than traditional posed settings, and in natural light rather than artificial.

Anyway, the family photo shoot ended up getting cancelled, but the rehearsal gave me a chance to take some candid photos as well as get some practice in that setting.

Sleepy ringbearer

The preference for candid over formal posed, of course, means that I will never be able to work as a proper wedding photographer. Another reason: I don't like being intrusive during the ceremony. If I had been the Official Ceremony Photographer, I would have had to be out front and center, getting in the way of more casual photographers.

Ceremony

Walter felt similarly, so we both lurked -behind- the scene instead of in front. Still, this gave me the chance to watch Rand pacing as he waited for the ceremony to begin. I was already getting teary-eyed by then, of course. I've always been charmed and amused by Rand's pacing habit over the years and I couldn't help but think heck, how cool is it that here I am, watching Rand pace at his own wedding, minutes before the Big Event.

Another pre-ceremony scene that I found particularly moving: Erin's father waiting to lead his daughter down the aisle:

Erin's dad waits

In order to take any proper photos, however, I found that I had to force myself to emotionally detach somewhat from what was going on around me. I found this a HUGE challenge at the wedding of one of my closest friends.

Flowers

I learned a ton in terms of photography this past weekend. Such as:

- As much as I dislike using flash, I need to get an external flash. And maybe a diffuser like Walter's. Backlighting was a major challenge for me, both in the reception/wedding location and in one of the 12-minute wedding shoot locations.

- Getting the right exposure with a bride in a very white dress and a groom in a very black tuxedo is tough!

Erin and Rand, newlyweds

- Scout out the photo locations myself ahead of time, whenever possible, so I have a better idea of what the lighting will be like. Make sure there's a good and well-lit INDOOR location in case of rain.

Erin getting ready

- It's worth taking photos at the highest resolution possible. And I really, REALLY have to learn how to process RAW images (and therefore have a reason to take pics in RAW). I didn't spend as much as Walter in prepping for this wedding weekend, but I did buy two 4 GB memory cards on the way to the wedding; up to now, I've only been using a 1 GB card. This enabled me to take a lot of high-res photos without worrying about space.

Bridal Suite

- My Sigma 30/1.4 lens is great, but the Canon 17-85 lens came in very handy for when I was very close to the people I wanted to photograph. I'm glad I decided to switch to the 17-85 just before I left the Bridal Suite with Erin for wedding, for example, else I wouldn't have been able to get this shot of members of the visiting nun convention admiring her wedding finery in the elevator:

In the elevator with nuns

Or this photo on the way to the wedding:

Erin, on the way to her wedding

I had no idea that I'd be riding in the car with Erin and her parents to the wedding, by the way; that was a decision made at the very last minute -- I told them I'd be fine walking, but Erin's mom generously insisted I come with them.

At first I felt awkward, thinking someone closer to the family should be there instead, but then I figured it gave me a chance to take some extra "on the way to the wedding" candid photos. :-)

The bride-to-be arrives

When we arrived, Rand was out in the parking lot getting something from the car, so Erin's mom asked me to make sure he didn't see Erin. Here he is, waiting for the elevator outside the building.

Don't look, Rand!

I acted as lookout, letting Erin and her parents know when it was safe to come use the elevator themselves. We used the service elevator at the rear of the Pearl Street Grill to avoid having to walk through the reception area. Here's a shot of Erin and her parents waiting for the elevator:

Waiting for the elevator

The 12-minute wedding photo shoot went better than I had hoped; I was majorly stressed right afterward because of the rain/security guard cutting things short, but I think I did get a few decent shots. I was lucky, however, in that Erin and Rand are great photo subjects -- easygoing and relaxed with each other in front of the camera.

Plus they're darned cute together. :-)

Next up: THE WEDDING.

Squirrels Are Vile And Evil And Ate My Lettuce!

My Life In A Nutshell

When Jeff and I came back from the cottage, I immediately went out back to check on my little garden of vegetables and herbs. They were all thriving, and I was especially pleased by the lettuce. I decided to harvest it this weekend; how wonderful it would be to have a salad made from lettuce I had grown from seed, after all!

Yesterday morning, however, here's what was left:

What The Squirrels Left

Jeff thinks it was a rabbit. I, on the other hand, place the blame on the neighbourhood squirrels. I find it hard to believe that a rabbit would venture up on our back deck, manage to maneuver its way around all the other planters without knocking any over, and know to stand up on its hind legs to reach the lettuce leaves in my (purposely) tall planter.

Plus bunnies are cute and SQUIRRELS ARE EVIL.

They only left a few forlorn and wilted leaves that weren't good enough for eating.

What The Squirrels Left

They also razed my biggest Thai Basil Plant as well as all my baby carrot plants (see above).

Grrr.

Evil Squirrels Feasting On My Lettuce

And for those who doubt that squirrels eat lettuce, check out this YouTube video:

Okay, maybe BABY squirrels aren't evil.

Yet.
