still sick

Happy Birthday, Reid!

So I've been feeling like a victim of the salt creature in one of the Classic Star Trek episodes, except instead of being left an empty husk examined briefly by a somewhat jaded Dr. McCoy ("She's dead, Jim"), I find myself drained of energy and all motivation except to sleep like the undead, rousing myself occasionally to sprawl on our living room couch blinking dazedly (think Jabba the Hutt) at the TV screen, guzzling Nyquil straight out of the bottle, the crumpled wrappers of mini Aero chocolate bars scattered at my feet like dead alien butterflies.

Hoo boy, I think it's time to go back to bed...

Nyquil haze

From the Roy Thomson Hall open house on the weekend.
The curved flute is for a young child, part of the
"petting zoo" display table from Long & McQuade.

Happy Birthday to my sister Ruth!

Sick for the past couple of days, think I caught this cold from Jeff, who was sick most of last week. Sent out another magazine article query yesterday, got a go-ahead from the editor.

Retreating into my Nyquil haze again...

Kirk Elliott, one of the musicians who played free concerts
all day Sunday. He's playing a medieval-style viola here.

filking.net

Finished and sent off my NaNoWriMo article yesterday, got confirmation for another article due in November after hashing out some of the details with the editor.

Keep forgetting to mention: On the weekend, after upgrading to the most recent version of MovableType, I've converted The Dandelion Report to MovableType as well as the Filk FAQ. How I wish MovableType was around when I started Inkspot; it would have made my life so much easier. I've set things up so that most of the content is going to be generated by the filk community, with occasional nudges from me. :-)

For example, here's my current poll, which asks: "I have songwriter's block! Any advice?" Respondents post their replies in the comments section at the bottom of the page, and I'll eventually compile the comments into a summary answer -- but meanwhile, everyone can view all comments posted so far. The page becomes part of the Filk FAQ.

Speaking of Inkspotstuff, my non-compete agreement with Xlibris has expired. No, I'm not planning to rush out and start up another Inkspot; I'm pretty happy with the way things are (and besides, I have Inkygirl :-)). On the other hand, I've had to turn down a couple of ongoing assignments because of the non-compete in the past few years, so it will be nice to not having it hanging over my head anymore.

sense of life

Condolences to our friend Parki (Brian Parkinson) and his family; Parki's mother passed away early Saturday morning.

Jeff and I were hanging out with Parki last night, and I was shocked to find out that his mother was 74 when she died. Shocked because I had assumed she was somewhere in her early 50s; she had an amazingly sharp wit and was always full of energy and good humour. Jeff and I had dinner with Parki and his parents earlier this year; it was way fun, with a lot of laughter, and I clearly remember looking at Parki's mom at some point during the evening and thinking I wanted to be like her when I got older.

isabel letdown

Terence Chua as a youngster. Cuuuute!

Hurricane Isabel was certainly a letdown in Toronto, after all the media hype. There was some rain briefly here and there, a bit of wind. I was out during the day, hoping to experience part of the storm (running in a leftover hurricane, y'know), but was sadly disappointed.

Edited another chapter of my novel, worked on an article that's due Monday, got a go-ahead from an editor for another article. I haven't needed to use ViaVoice for a couple of days.

I went a bit nuts on my Wacom yesterday and updated the comics for Waiting For Frodo, My Life In A Nutshell, and Inkygirl. If you're on Livejournal and want to be automatically sent any updated comic strips, add "ohi" to your Friends list (or click on the "doodles" link in the lefthand navigation bar on this page). Please note that I don't maintain a Friends list for that Livejournal account; my regular Livejournal is "ohiblather".

Finished writing another Lord of the Rings song, this one called "The Question".

Thanks for all the bread feedback! Looks like I'm not the only fan of San Francisco Sourdough (Andrea, Lissa). :-) I was also reminded of some other types of bread I really like: malt bread, challah, focaccia (JimP, MaryC, Lainiekins), pumpkin (Rand brought me some once). Breads I really want to try after reading various LJ and Blatherchat comments and chatting with people on the Filkhaven IRC: apricot-almond bread (CatF), chocolate chip bread (CatF), Hawaiian bread (BillR), Alfaro's Santa Cruz Extra Sour sourdough (WilliamR), peanut butter (meritmaat), German chocolate bread (DaveW, Colin), Amanda's Snyder's bread, Sweet Batard (Lainiekins).

And of course now I have the urge to take out my breadmaker and bake something. :-)

Links and news

Congrats to Graham Leathers, who is playing a radio announcer and a giant mosquito for the pilot episode of "Sleuth and Sorcery" on CBC!
