poll: song co-writing

Andrea and Tom, on the weekend.

On the weekend, I had the opportunity to hear some of the tracks from Andrea Dale's upcoming CD, "Zen Cappuccino", including her cover of my song, "Homecoming", and our co-written song, "Saxophone in Spring" (which includes my flute and backup vocals). I was nervous about the latter because it was the first time I had ever purposely recorded my vocals for someone else's CD project. Bill Sutton did a great job at keeping me from freaking out during the recording session, however, and I have to say that I'm pretty happy about how the track turned out. Looking forward to the official release of Andrea's CD! For more information about Andrea's projects, see her Web site.

Poll: Musical co-writing

To you songwriters out there: How often do you co-write with other people? What's your process? (do you write together? one does lyrics and the other does music? etc.)

Sara, on her birthday.

Our friends Scott and Anita arrive today!

Does anyone have Jim Leonard's current e-mail address? I tried using the one listed on his Concertino photo page, but it bounced. Thanks.

sara turns 9

My sister Ruth holding Sara.

It seems like only a short while ago that Jeff drove Ruth and Kaarel to the hospital when my niece Sara was about to be born. I remember holding her shortly after her birth; how small and fragile she seemed! It was also a major adjustment for me to see Ruth as a mother, and not just as my little sister.

Sara.

Some of you have been reading my Blatherings long enough to probably remember when I had a special Web site for Sara, and you contributed advice on my message board. Someday I will have to dig through my archives and post all that advice, so Sara can read it.

A quick poll: how many of you were around when I had that site online? I'm curious.

She seems so grown-up now, my niece Sara. I can't believe she's nine years old! The years speed by so fast... yes, I know this borders on cliche, but I can see where the cliche comes from.

Sara as Cinderella in her school play earlier this year.

She still lets me hug her sometimes, but instead of cuddling a complacent infant, I find my arms full of quicksilver. A brief hug and then bam, she's off to play soccer in the backyard, inventing or creating, tickling Annie, doing a science experiment, always ready to embrace the world.

And every so often, I see a flash of the young woman she will someday be, and I am full of wonder.

Happy birthday, Sara.

guest blathering: tom and andrea

Ferris Ferret, a Geomag creation by Tom Algeo

(Note from Debbie: Jim Leonard has his photos from Concertino online.)

Hi Everyone,

Andrea and I are visiting Debbi on the tail-end of a weeklong vacation to the Adirondacks. We had a Nick-free week since our 2 1/2-year-old is spending quality time with his grandparents in Michigan. The Adirondacks were pretty if somewhat overdeveloped. We got in a few hikes, a boat excursion, some sightseeing, and a lot of good eating and B-and-B-ing. We are now enyoying the hospitality of Debbie and Jeff, who have a great view from the 24th floor of their building of downtown Toronto. When Andrea blathers next, be sure to ask her about the 30-second whacked bush video.

Tom Algeo

Hi Folks,

Tom and I are finishing off a relaxed and enjoyable vacation, with the last two days spent at the home of Debbie and Jeff. As Tom noted, we did a variety of activities in the Adironacks, including eating too much food (note to self, eat salads this week!).

We arrived at the Ohi/Ridpath's yesterday and are heading to my parents later today . . In anticipation of seeing our son Nick ;-)

Last night we had dinner at a local Greek restaurant, splitting three ways a sinfully rich "Chocolate Mousse Bomb" dessert after our meal. Yesterday afternoon, Tom made yummy banana bread in Debbie's kitchen while Debbie and I talked and listened to music.

Thanks Debbie and Jeff for hosting us!

Andrea

BTW - Please note that Tom's 30-second rock hill video is just as intriguing as my "wacked bush" production.

Hi Everyone!

Debbie urged me to respond to scurrilous insinuations :) in the "BTW" message above ("blathering wars" was her coinage). Let me make absolutely clear that the 13- (not 30-) second "rock video" was merely the consequence of my unfamiliarity with Andrea's camera, which I was using for the first time, and that I had not noticed that it was preset to "movie mode" rather than to "photo mode."

Tom

p.s. Andrea reads Tom's note and thinks "Picky, picky, picky . . . "

poll: summer movies

Sign on Queen Street. Sort of defeats the meaning
of the word "specialise", don't you think?

Poll: Best and worst movies this summer

Is it my imagination, or is this year's summer offering of movies worse than usual? Or maybe I'm just missing out on some gems.... hence this poll. What is the worst movie you have seen this summer so far? Best movie?

My favorite so far: Finding Nemo

Worst: must think about this, so many to choose from.

Andrea and Tom arrive in a couple of hours, woohoo!

concertino highlights

Allison, Jodi and me at Concertino. Photo by Steve Brinich.

(Concertino photo/report continued... )

I'll post a few more pictures from Concertino today and then move onto other topics after this, I promise. I always find it hard to "come down" after a good filk convention, so can't help but linger. Thank you for your indulgence. :-)

Bill Roper, Steve Macdonald and Jodi in the consuite.

I'm pleased to report that I did indeed play a little bit of flute during the weekend, and enjoyed it thoroughly. I was careful not to overdo it, though it was hard to resist sometimes. I found that sitting still for long periods of time was the toughest on my arms, which is one reason I didn't attend much of the programming, especially back-to-back concerts, and couldn't sit for very long in open filk without taking a break. I may have to do the same at Torcon.

Rika and me. Rachel in the row behind us!

To the Concertino concom and consuite organizers: THANK YOU. You all did an amazing job. I am always immensely grateful to those people who volunteer to help run a convention, mainly because I know it's something that I could never do -- I lack the patience and organizational skills.

Victor and Robin.

At Concertino, I was especially impressed by the quality and quantity of food and drink in the consuite. Robin and Victor, you two deserve medals! It seemed as if every time we turned around, one of you was carrying out a plate of more food. Thanks also to all those who contributed goodies.

Melissa and Daniel Glasser in concert.

Some other personal highlights highlights from the convention:

- Shuttle ride from airport...the most entertaining I've ever had. :-)

- Surprise appearance at the convention by Katy!

- When Jeff & Maya Bohnhoff performed my song Homecoming in our Song Tribute panel. "Almeda" posted a link to a video/audio excerpt from the performance in her Livejournal, if you're interested. I love the fact that Amanda is blissfully asleep in Maya's arms throughout.

I'm really touched that people like the song well enough to learn it themselves. Other people I know who currently cover Homecoming: Puzzlebox, Andrea Dale, Rand Bellavia. As those of you who have heard it already know, it's a song of love and loss, and expresses some of the feelings I have about my brother's death in the context of one of my favourite Ray Bradbury short stories.

- Burt's Bees Bath Crystals and Peppermint Soap from Rob and Larissa (thanks! I've used both already and love them)

- special hugs from Melissa Glasser

- Jeff's and Maya's Guest of Honor concert. Holy cow, were they ever good. Not only are they unbelievably talented, but they also have a wonderful rapport with the audience; their standing ovation was well-deserved. Great guests...friendly, approachable, and Amanda is gosh-darned adorable; I'm hoping they're invited out to more East Coast conventions.

- When Rob & Larissa bought our Interfilk auction item --- thank you so much for supporting Interfilk!

- Urban Tapestry's 10th Anniversary Party in the consuite.

Jeff Bohnhoff. :-)

- Pillow fight with Allison on Friday night. Ensuing gigglefest with Allison and Jodi when we should have been sleeping.

- Our children's concert. It was so fun, seeing how enthusiastic adults can be. :-D Bravo to all of you who weren't embarrassed about showing your inner child!

- Reminiscing about Battlestar Galactica in the consuite.

- Consuite filk late Sunday night.

Camera war with Gary Ehrlich.

Augh, too many highlights to list. Haven't even gotten to fun parodies, spending time with friends, how wonderful all the guests were.

Must go back to work. Finished and sent off my Nahanni article, started working on my column for Writing World.

Tiny plane! Air Canada is obviously cutting back.
No flight attendant, no refreshments. The pilot gave us the
safety talk, then went back to the cockpit.
