My favorite time is when I can close my office door, pull out a manuscript or manuscript and sketches, spread it around and get lost in the words and the pictures while I try to channel the intentions of the author and illustrator.

Q. What is your favorite flavor of birthday cake?

Chocolate cake with Aunt Evelyn’s Delicious Frosting

Q. What advice do you have for young writers and illustrators?

The best way to improve your own writing is to read widely and to revise everything you write.

Q, Is there anything else that you'd like young readers to know about you?

I feel very fortunate to have a job that I love where I'm never bored. Every title is a new beginning.

Cathy Goldsmith, Maria Modugno and Martha Rago.
